Hello, My name is James and I am fundraising to build primary school in my village in South Sudan. I started fundraising for this school in S. Sudan in 2012, when I set up the Incorporated Body. Prior to that I went with an empty tin and a few posters of my village to my local shopping mall in Western Australia – and started collecting change from people. The experience in the shopping mall both surprised and inspired me, because I discovered people were interested and willing to donate what they could. However, I was told that collecting money this way was not quite legal. I then set about learning how to establish the charity now known as Ausudan Inc. We have come a long way since then, and it has taken lots of patience, and hard work! The really lovely thing about the project is that it has been funded by the generosity of ordinary people - with limited money to spare - who have been touched by Christine (my wife) and my story. Currently, we have the walls of 8 classrooms and an administration block built and it is at last becoming a reality! At this point in time we are raising money for the toilets, smoothing classrooms floors and walls, complete teachers tukuls (local huts) to accommodate teachers, and pay teachers wages. This school project has been the dream of my wife, myself and generations of the people in my village including my parents. Recently, my two younger sisters who are managing the construction of the school told me that, the people in the village and the surrounding villages are extremely happy to see that their school is finally becoming a reality. That their children will finally attend classes under well-built classrooms rather than under trees. In a briefing note from UNICEF in April 2021 the following facts were stated about education of children in S Sudan. There is a significant increase in the number of out-of-school children, from 2.2 million in 2018 to 2.8 million in 2020. This does not include the 2 million students out of school due to COVID 19. Girls are particularly disadvantaged. •The anticipated return of refugees from neighbouring countries will further exacerbate the out of school children crisis. • School closures due to COVID-19 and non-payments of salary increased risk of drop-out and non-return qualified teachers. • Inaccessibility and limited provision of education opportunities due to insecurity and weather-related factors (like floods) led to increased cost of operations (supply and logistics). Our school in Sindiru Village will be an amazing accomplishment and a source of great encouragement to the people of Sindiru and neighbouring villages. Education is seen as the only way forward for this next generation of children, and we here in Australia, can be part of that effort.
